Potato -Green peas curry(Punjabi recipe)

Baby potatoes and green peas is popular vegetarian dish. Baby potatoes marinated with yogurt and spices then cooked in onion-tomato, base rich creamy gravy.  Green peas complements to potato very well.It is royal, delicious dish and very easy to make.


  • Baby potatoes – 8 to 1o
  • Green peas-1 cup
  • For marination
    • Hung curd-2 tbsp
    • Salt-1/2 tsp
    • Coriander  powder-1/2 tsp
    • Red chili powder-1/2 tsp
    • Cumin powder-1/2 tsp
    • Ginger garlic pase-1/2 tsp
  • For gravy
    • Cashew nut – 6 to 7
    • Onion -1/2 cup chopped
    • Ginger garlic paste – 1 tsp
    • Cumin seed – 1 tsp
    • Red chili powder – 1 tsp
    • Tomato-1 chopped
    •  Whole black paper –  1/2 tsp
    •  Whole green cardamom – 2 to 3
    • Bay leaf – 1 to 2
    • Clove – 1 to 2
    • Cinnamon – 1 stick
    • Salt – 1/2 tsp (as per taste)
    • Cooking oil – 4 tbs
    • Garam masala – 1 tsp
    • Coriander leaves – 2 tbsp finely chopped


Step 1 – Take  one cup water in a saucepan and add cashew nut, chopped tomatoes then boil it for 10-12 minutes till mixture gets soften. Switch off flame and cool it keep aside.

Step 2 – Wash baby potatoes with water and put on cooker  with 2 cup water and 1/2 tsp salt and cook it for 3-4 whistles. Cool it completely and peel all potatoes and keep aside.

Step 3 – In  bowl take boiled, peeled potatoes add hung curd, all spices and mix it gently then cover it and keep in freeze for 30-60 minutes.Put green peas in microwave safe bowl and cook 2 minutes,keep aside.

Step 4 -In nonstick pan  heat, 2tbsp   oil,  add chopped onion and cook it for 2 minutes .In same pan add marinated potatoes and cook for another 3-5 minutes in medium flame till it gets golden in color. Keep it aside.

Step 5 -In grinder take onion, boiled cashew nut, tomatoes and grind  it to make smooth paste. Keep it aside.

Step 6– In other nonstick pan heat 2 tbsp oil, add cumin seed, cloves, green cardamom, bay leaf, cinnamon and saute till it it get fragrant.  Add ginger garlic paste,green peas cook 2 minutes,add onion-tomato paste and cook it for 2-3minutes. Add red chili powder, coriander powder, garam masala and mix it .

Step 7 -Add green peas and  potatoes in tomato masala , cook in low flame for 5-7 minutes.  Remove from heat and garnish it with fresh coriander leaves.

Serve with Roti/Naan !!!
