Laddu Pethi with Apricot and Tamarind sauce

Laddu Pethi is very popular  street food  from Lahore,Pakistan cuisine .Its look like falafel,made with lentil, deep fried  snack served with Apricot sauce , tamarind-prunes sauce and radish salad. It is very easy to make at home.

Ingredients (For 8 to 10 pieces)

For Laddus:

  • Urad dal(split, dehusked black gram lentils)-1 cup
  • Chickpeas/Bengal gram (Chana dal)-1 cup
  • Cumin seed-1tsp
  • Baking soda-1/2 tsp
  • Salt-1tsp(to taste)
  • Red chili powder-1 tsp
  • Oil-for frying

For Apricot sauce:

  • Dried apricot-1 cup
  • Salt-1/2 tsp as per taste
  • Cumin powder-1/2 tsp
  • Red chili powder-1/2 tsp

For Tamarind-plum sauce:

  • Tamarind pulp-1/2 cup
  • Plums(prunes)-1/2 cup
  • Salt-1/2 tsp
  • Sugar-1/2 tsp
  • Red chili powder-1 tsp
  • Cumin powder-1 /2tsp

Radish Salad


Step 1 – Wash   both lentils separately  and soak for overnight(at least 8 -10 hours)  in lots of water.also wash and soak apricot,plums(prunes),tamarind separately in sufficient water for 3-4 hours for best results.

Step2- Take soaked apricot  add 2 cup water  salt,red chili powder,cumin powder  in a saucepan,cover it and  boil it 20 minutes  till apricot absorb all water.Cool it for 10 minutes.take apricot  in grinder and grind it 1 minutes for soft texture,keep it aside.

Step3-Take soaked tamarind,seedless prunes add 2 cup water,salt,red chili powder,cumin powder,sugar, in a saucepan cover it and boil  it for 20 minutes cool it.Take cooled tamarind-  prunes mixture in  grinder grind it for 30 seconds .With the help of strainer strain it , collect puree for sauce.

Step 4 –In grinder take dal  and add all ingredients( except oil and salt,baking soda) and grind, make smooth fluffy batter (you can add 1-2 tbs water).

Step 5 – Take batter in bowl and mix for 1-2 minutes then add salt,baking soda and mix again 1-2 minute.

Step 6 – Heat oil for frying on medium hot oil,take small lemon size ball in palm and make flatten it .

Step 7 – Slid the Laddu in hot oil fry in low medium flame  until both side crispy and golden brown.

Step 8 – Take out Laddu and keep in tissue paper and fry all laddu in similar way. Serve crispy Laddu with apricot sauce,tamarind- prunes sauce and fresh radish salad.
