Ukadiche Modak(Steamed Modak)

Modaks are sweet stuffed dumpling  popular in Maharashtra,India. Made with rice flour and grated coconut flavored with saffron ,cardamom .

Ingredients(10-12 pieces)

For Stuffing-

  • Coconut-1 cup,fresh grated
  • Milk-2 tsp
  • Sugar/jaggery – 1/2 cup
  • Mawa – 1 cup(Homemade,optional)
  • Saffron – Few threads
  • Cardamom powder – 1/2 tsp

For Outer layer

  • Rice flour-1 cup
  •  Water-3/4 cup
  • Ghee -2 tsp


Step 1 – Heat non-stick pan then add ghee, grated coconut  cook for 10 to 15 minutes until mixture   become dry then add sugar and cook 5 -10 minutes.

Step 2 – Mix saffron and milk keep aside.

Step 3 – Add cardamom  powder, mawa,saffron and mix it proper Cook it for 8-10 minutes in medium flame. Cool it for 10 minutes.

Step 4 – Take water in a pan boil it add ,1 tsp ghee and rice flour and remove from heat mix well and cover it keep aside for 30minutes.

Step5-After 30 minutes  open lid and kneed 1-2 minutes rice dough.Make small lemon size ball from dough and flatten it like small puri,put 1 tsp stuffing in center of puri and close it proper ,make all modak similar way.

Step6-Steam all modak in any type of steamer for 10-12 minutes till modak look shine.
