Tomato Rice(South Indian Recipe)

Tomato rice is delicious, healthy, rice meal in which rice cooked with  tomato and flavored with spices. It is one pot rice dish very easy to make.


  • Basmati Rice – 1 cup
  • Chana dal – 1 tsp
  • Urad dal-1 tsp
  • Salt – 1/2tsp(to test)
  • Cashew nut – 4 to 6
  • Cooking oil/Ghee – 2 tbsp
  • Cloves -3 to 4
  • Bay leaf – 1 to 2
  • Mustard seed – 1 tsp
  • Cumin seed-1 tsp
  • Red chili powder – 1tsp
  • Green chili – 1 finely chopped
  • Ginger paste – 1tsp
  •  Tomato –1 cup finely chopped
  • Curry leaves – 7 to 8
  • Garam masala- 1/2 tsp
  • Biryani masala – 1 tbsp
  • Onion – 1/2 cup  chopped
  • Whole dry red chili – 1 to 2
  • Cherry tomato – 6 to 7 optional cut in to half


Step 1 -Wash and soak rice for 30-45 minute.

Step 2 – Heat 2 tbsp oil/ghee  in a nonstick pan add mustard seed. When seed crackle add urad dal, chana dal and roast it till it becomes brown. Add cumin seed, whole red chili, clove, cashew nut and  cook for 30 seconds. Add ginger paste and mix it then add onion just saute it (do not cook onion till brown). Add chopped tomato and cook for  2-3 minutes. Add curry leaves and cherry tomato, chili powder, garam masala, biriyani masala, salt and mix it. Add rice and again mix well so  rice coated with  spices. Add  2 cups of  boiled water and cook in high flame .When water boils, cover rice with lid  and cook for 5-7minutes in low flame till it become soft and rice absorbed all water. Remove it from heat and keep aside. Do not open lid for minimum 10 minutes. After 10 minutes serve  Tomato rice with papad.
