Curd Rice(Yogurt Rice)

Curd rice is delicious, healthy, rice meal originated from South Indian States of Tamil Nadu ,Karnatka, Kerla, Andhra Pradesh.  It is made with cooked rice and curd then tempered to roasted with  urad dal, crunchy cashew nut and little spices. This needs very few ingredients but tastes amazing and also very good for kids.


  • Basmati Rice – 1 cup
  • Chana dal – 1 tsp
  • Urad dal – 1 tsp
  • Salt – 1/2tsp(to test)
  • Cashew nut – 4 to 6
  • Cooking oil/Ghee – 1 tbsp
  • Mustard seed – 1 tsp
  • Cumin seed – 1 tsp
  • Green chili – 1 finely chopped
  • Curry leaves – 7 to 8
  • Whole dry red chili – 1 to 2
  • Cucumber-2 tbsp grated


Step 1 -Wash and soak rice for 30-45 minutes.

Step 2 – Pressure cook 1 cup rice, 2 cup water with 3 whistles and  more 2-3  minutes in low flame. Cool rice and keep aside.

Step 3 -Take cooled rice in a bowl and add salt, grated cucumber, chopped green chili, curd and mix well.

Step 4 – Heat 1 tbsp oil/ghee  in a nonstick pan add mustard seed when seed crackle add urad dal, chana dal roast until it becomes brown. Add cumin seed, whole red chili, cashew nut, curry leaves, pour this tempering into rice and mix it. Serve it fresh.

  2. I’m going to have to find the ingredients for this – it looks too good to miss! Better still, maybe I’ll learn to make ghee and urad dal instead of trying to buy them.
    This is exciting…

    1. Thank you Jane. All ingredients should be easily available on any grocery shop. Yes ghee can be made at home; that’s good idea.
