Chana Sundal and Ragi Roti(Karnataka’s Recipe)

Karnataka cuisine  is one of the oldest, surviving cuisine. Ragi roti serve in  breakfast. Ragi/Finger millet is loaded with calcium, vitamin D, protein, iron, fiber. Chana sundal  is a stir fry dish also healthy, low fat, protein  loaded recipe which is  often cook during festival and side dish.


  • For Ragi Roti
    • Ragi flour-1 cup
    • Wheat flour-1/4 cup optional
    • Salt-1/2 tsp to taste
    • Onion-2tsp finely chopped
    • Garlic-1 tsp finely chopped
    • Green chilli-1 tsp finely chopped
    • Coriander leaves-1 tsp finely chopped
    • Coconut -2 tsp fresh grate
    • Black paper powder-1/2tsp
    • Cumin powder-1/2 tsp
    • Cooking oil- 2 tbs
  • For Chana Sundal(3-4serving)
    • White Chickpeas/chhole-1 cup
    • Mustard seed-1/2 tsp
    • Urad dal-1 tsp
    • Asafoetida/hing-1 pinch
    • Whole  Red chilli-1-2
    • Curry leaves-5-6
    • Coconut-1/2 cup fresh grated
    • Salt- to taste
    • Cooking oil-1 tbs
    • Lemon juice-1 tsp (optional)


Step 1 – Mix all ingredients  (except  oil) in a bowl and make stiff dough with  water ,cover it and keep aside for 10 minutes.

Step 2 – Take lemon size ball from dough and roll it  using dry ragi flour and cut with round cutter for perfect shape.

Step 3 – Heat nonstick pan  and place roti and cook in low medium flame,apply  little oil on roti and cook proper in both side  3-4 minutes, for crispy roti. Make all roti similar way and serve hot/cold  with curd/chutney/Chana Sundal.

Step 4 – Wash and soak chhole for 8-10 hours(overnight)  in sufficient  water.

Step 5 – After 8 hour  wash chhole with fresh water .Take chhole in pressure cooker add 1/2 tsp salt, 3 cup water  give 3 whistles and cook simmer for 3-5 minutes,remove from heat and cool it  until pressure comes down naturally,open lid and drain chhole.

Step 6 – Heat a pan add 1 tsp oil ,add mustard seed  when  seed crackle,add urad dal saute it until it turns light brown,add asafoetida,red chili, green chili, curry leaves saute for 30 seconds then add drain chhole mix well and cook 3-5 minutes then add coconut saute it for 30 seconds, mix well and remove from heat.Add lemon juice serve  hot.
